California Firms Agree To Pay $4.2 Million To Resolve Allegations Of Fraud Against The U.S. Postal Service

On October 20, 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had reached a settlement agreement with Quicksort Inc., Quicksort LA Inc., and Quicksort Sacramento Inc. to resolve allegations that the firms violated the False Claims Act by misrepresenting the degree to which they pre-sorted mail in order to obtain discounted postage rates from the U.S. Postal Service.  The Postal Service offers lower postage rates to mailers that automate and sort their mail by zip code because it saves the postal service time and money.  According to the DOJ, the Quicksort companies falsely represented the pre-sort level of mail they submitted to the Postal Service in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
